Beseeching the Lord, who is our Helper, to help us to observe self-control in all circumstances, and explaining the harmful and pernicious consequences of indiscipline.

    az ḳhudā jo.em taufīq-e-adab

    be-adab mahrūm shud az lutf-e-rab

Let us implore God to help us to self-control:

one who lacks self-control is deprived of the grace of the Lord.

be-adab tanhā na ḳhud dāsht bad

balki ātish dar hama āfāq zad

The undisciplined man does not maltreat

himself alone, but he sets the whole world on fire.

    māyada az āsmāñ dar mī-rasīd

    be-sudā'-o-be-farokHt-o-be-kHarīd

A table (of food) was coming down from heaven without

buying and selling and without speaking and hearing,

    darmiyān-e-qaum-e-mūsā chand kas

    be-adab guftand sīr-o-'adas

(When) some of the people of Moses cried disrespectfully,

    Where is garlic and lentils?

    munqata.a shud nān-o-kHvān-e-āsmāñ

    maañd ranj-e-zar'e-o-bail-o-dāsmāñ

(Straightway) the dishes (of food) and the bread from heaven were cut off:

there remained for us the toil of sowing and (labouring with) mattock and scythe.

baaz 'iisā chuuñ shafā'at kard haq

    ḳhvāñ firistād-o-ġhanīmat bar tabaq

    Again, when Jesus made intercession,

God sent food and bounty (from heaven) on trays,

    baaz gustākHāñ adab ba-guzāshtand

    chuuñ gadāyāñ zulla-hā bardāshtand

But once more the insolent fellows omitted to show respect and,

like beggars, snatched away the viands.

laaba karda 'iisā īshāñ ki iiñ

    dāyamast-o-kam na-gardad az zamīñ

    (Although) Jesus entreated them, saying,

This is lasting and will not fail from off the earth.

    bad-gumānī kardan-o-hirs-āvarī

    kufr bāshad pesh-e-ḳhvān-e-mehtarī

To show suspicion and greed at the

    table of Majesty is ingratitude.

    ze-āñ gadā rūyān-e-nādīda ze-āz

aañ dar-e-rahmat bar īshāñ shud farāz

Because of those impudent wretches who were blinded by greed,

that gate of mercy was closed upon them.

    abr bar nāyad pa-e-man-e'-zkāt

vaz zinā uftad vabā andar jihāt

On account of withholding the poor-tax no rain-clouds arise,

and in consequence of fornication the plague spreads in all directions.

Whatever befalls thee of gloom and sorrow is the

result of irreverence and insolence withal.

har ki be-bākī kunad dar rāh-e-dost

    rahzan-e-mardāñ shud-o-nā-mard uust

Any one behaving with irreverence in the path of the

Friend is a brigand who robs men, and he is no man.

az adab pur-nūr gashtast iiñ falak

    vaz adab mā'sūm-o-pāk aamad malak

Through discipline this Heaven has been filled with light,

and through discipline the angels became immaculate and holy.
