His real name was Wilayat Ali Khan and his pen-name was Aziz. He was born in 1843 in Unnao district, Safipur. His lineage goes back to Khwaja Usman Harooni who was the mentor of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Aziz Safipuri's ancestors were associated with the court of Nawabs of Awadh. From his great-grandfather to his father Munshi Yahya Ali Khan were all employed in the court of the Nawabs of Awadh and continued to serve in other positions of Munshi. Until the reign of Wajid Ali Shah, this family remained in the royal service, and in the same line of service Aziz Safipuri also resided in Lucknow till the age of 15 years. Due to the uprising of 1857, he left Lucknow and went to his maternal hometown Safipur. He spent his whole life with contentment and trust on a government allowance of only seven rupees and eight annas. He died in 1928. From an early age, he was enriched by the wealth of Sufism because of the company of Sufis and scholars. Aziz Safipuri has an important place in the development of Urdu literature. Dr. Abdul Haq wrote in his famous book "The Role of Sufis in the Early Development of Urdu: "Aziz Safipuri's poetic taste can be gauged from his letters. Which have been written by Mirza Ghalib, Altaf Hussain Hali, Shibli Numani, Ameer Minai, and other famous poets and in which their teaching and art have been acknowledged. Ghalib has written a letter regarding his Persian prose and poetry."
