    javāb guftan-e-ḳhargosh nakHchīrāñ

How the hare answered the beasts.

guft ai yārāñ marā mohlat dahīd

    ba-makram az balā bairūñ jahīd

O friends, said he, grant me a respite,

that by my cunning ye may escape from calamity,

    amaañ mānad ba-makram jān-e-tāñ

    mānad iiñ mīrās-e-farzandān-e-tāñ

That by my cunning your lives may be saved

and this (safety) remain as a heritage to your children.

    har payambar darmiyān-e-ummatāñ

    ham-chunīñ tā-mukHlisī ḳhvāñd shaañ

After this manner every prophet in the world

used to call the peoples to a place of deliverance,

kaz falak rāh-e-barūñ sho diida buud

dar nazar chuuñ mardumak pechīda buud

For he had seen from Heaven the way of escape, (though) in (their)

sight he was contracted (despicable) like the pupil of the eye.

    mardumash chuuñ mardumak dīdand ḳhurd

dar buzurgī mardumak kas rah na-burd

Men regarded him as small like the pupil: none attained to

(understanding of) the (real) greatness (worth) of the pupil.
