guftā ki qattāl-e-jahāñ guftam ḳham-e-abrū-e-tū
guftā che ḳhush-tar az iram guftam fazā-e-kū-e-tū
He whispered: What is this world’s endless strife? I answered: The soft, perilous curve of your brow.
He asked: And what is lovelier than Paradise itself? I said: The air that drifts through your lane.
guftā nashāt-e-zindagī guftam havā-e-dāmanat
guftā shamīm-e-jāñ-fizā guftam ki ai gul-bū-e-tū
He said: What brings the soul its joy? I replied: The breeze that plays about your robe.
He asked: And what fragrance lifts the spirit? I murmured: O flower, it is your very scent.
guftā che sehr-e-sāmrī guftam nigāh-e-nāz-e- tū
guftā ki vārasta kunad guftam ki iiñ jādū-e-tū
He said: What sorcery beguiles like Samiri’s? I replied: The bewitching glance of your eyes.
He asked: And what sets the captive free? I whispered: The spell that lies within you.
guftā ki aalī martabat guftam ki darbān-e-darat
guftā ki faġhfūr-e-jahāñ guftam gadā-e-kū-e-tū
He said: Who is exalted in rank? I answered: The guardian at your door.
He asked: And who is monarch of the world? I replied: The beggar who dwells in your street.
guftā usūl-e-millat ast guftam tarīq-e-āshiqī
guftā ki daarī silsila guftam aziiñ gesū-e-tū
He said: What is the law you live by? I said: The path of love alone.
He asked: And what lineage sustains you? I replied: The dark cascade of your hair.
guftā kiche tasbīh kunī guftam ki vird-e-nām-e-tū
guftā che rukn-e-dīn-e-tū guftam qad-e-dil-jū-e-tū
He said: Whose name do you recite in prayer? I whispered: Yours, and yours alone.
He asked: What is the very pillar of faith? I said: The grace of your form, so fair.
guftā to aa.ī az kujā guftam ze-farmān-e-shumā
guftā maqām-e-raftanat guftam ki jānāñ sū-e-tū
He said: From whence have you come? I answered: By your command I journeyed.
He asked: And where do you go? I replied: Beloved, only towards you.
guftā ki aurād-e-sahar guftam ki dīdan ārizat
guftā namāz-e-shab turā guftam ḳhayāl-e-mū-e-tū
He said: What is the prayer of morning? I murmured: The vision of your face.
He asked: And what is the devotion of night? I replied: The memory of your tresses in the dark.
guftā bago man kīstam guftam ki ma.abūd-e-manī
guftā che īmāñ dāshtī guftam ki vallāh rū-e-tū
He said: Tell me then, who am I? I whispered: You are my very god.
He asked: Upon what rests your faith? I replied: By Heaven itself—upon your face.
guftā niko-dārī amal guftam gunahgār-e-tū-am
guftā che sāz-e-āqibat guftam ummīd az ḳhū-e-tū
He said: And do you live by righteous deeds? I confessed: No, I am but your sinner.
He asked: And what shall be your hope in the end? I said: The mercy that dwells in your nature.
guftā tū shaidā-e-kase guftam barīñ husn-e-ruḳhat
guftā ummīd-e-ḳhātirat guftam ki diid rū-e-tū
He said: Whose mad lover are you? I replied: Of your beauty alone.
He asked: What longing fills your heart? I said: To behold your radiant face.
