The Path of Tasawwuf From Heart to Heart

MORE BYDr. Irshad Balkhi

Tasawwuf is not a name, a group or an outer identity.

It is an inner path that focuses on purifying and improving the heart. It is not about which ṭaraqah (spiritual order) someone follows. It is about how a person lives from the heart.

Knowledge can be learned from books. A person can read it, explain it, and even teach it. But closeness to Allah does not come from words alone. True spiritual understanding is not just taught it awakens inside the heart. It shows itself in daily life: in good character, patience, humility and sincerity. In Tasawwuf, it is not important how beautifully someone speaks or which form of remembrance (Zikr) they use. What truly matters is inner certainty (Yaqeen) and surrender of the heart. Without surrender, closeness to Allah remains only an idea not a real experience.

As Pir-o-Murshid Hazrat Ṣabir Pasha Balkhi Chishti says:

Zaat to Zaat hai, Nadan kuch to samjha kar

Agar Parwaaz chahta hai to yaqeen paida kar

    Simple English meaning:

The Divine Reality is as it is try to understand this. If you want to rise higher, first develop true certainty in your heart.

When a person gains this certainty, their inner state changes. From this comes what we call Darwesh-hood a life of simplicity, humility, inner freedom and dignity.

    Allama Iqbal beautifully says:

Yaqeen paida kar aye Nadan! Yaqeen se haath aati hai

Woh Darweshi ke jis ke samne jhukti hai Faghfoori

    English meaning:

Create certainty within yourself, O unaware one. Through certainty, you gain such spiritual strength that even kings bow before it.

For this reason, the Shaykh (Murshid) has an important role in Tasawwuf. A Murshid is not just a teacher chosen by personal preference. He is a guide on the inner journey like a mirror that helps a person see and correct their inner weaknesses.

In reality, it is not the disciple (murīd) who chooses the guide. The connection happens by the

will of Allah. Often, this connection begins quietly, without any outward show.

The Murshid is not the final goal. He is a door.

When a disciple walks through that door with sincerity and trust, a journey begins that cannot

fully be explained it must be experienced.

Tasawwuf is not just one path among many.

It is depth in the relationship with Allah, with His Beloved Prophet Muhammad and with the friends of Allah (Auliya).

The true spirit of Tasawwuf is simple:

    Less talking.

    More living.

    Less claiming.

    More sincerity.
