Nawab Mustafa Khan Shefta was born on December 27, 1806 in Delhi. His father, Azeem-ul-Dawla was the luminary of the noble family. Nawab Mustafa used to write under the pen-name Shefta in Urdu and Hasrati in Persian. He had introduced Altaf Hussain Hali to Mirza Ghalib. He owned a large library in Delhi which was looted and set on fire by the rebels in 1857. The British had sentenced him to seven years in prison on suspicion of sedition, but on the recommendation of the eminent Indian scholar Nawab Siddique Hassan Khan, his "crime" was pardoned. He also studied the art of hadith and was known for his unique recitation, which was an art in that era. In 1255 AH, he visited Hajj. He swore allegiance to Shah Muhammad Ishaq Dehlavi, the grandson of Muhaddith Dehlavi, and after his demise, Shah Abu Saeed and Ahmad Saeed, who were pupils of Sajjada Nasheen-e-Khanqah-e-Shah, Ghulam Ali Mujaddidi. Finally, he renewed his allegiance to Shah Abdul Ghani Dehlavi and was granted permission and caliphate. He died in Delhi on July 11, 1869 and was laid to rest in the burial place of Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya.
