Once someone heard Mushfiq Khwaja، the first line of one of Hari Chand's compositions where 'Hell' was treated as masculine. Khawaja was asked whether 'Hell' was masculine or feminine? Well... it should be avoided in both the cases, he replied. After a brief pause he humorously remarked ' it's a feminine as people often have a longing for it despite knowing its dreadful effect'.
milegī shaiḳh ko jannat hameñ dozaḳh 'atā hogā
bas itnī baat hai jis ke liye mahshar bapā hogā
rahe do-do farishte saath ab insāf kyā hogā
kisī ne kuchh likhā hogā kisī ne kuchh likhā hogā
ba-roz-e-hashr hākim qādir-e-mutlaq ḳhudā hogā
farishtoñ ke likhe aur shaiḳh kī bātoñ se kyā hogā
tirī duniyā meñ sabr-o-shukr se ham ne basar kar lī
tirī duniyā se baḌh kar bhī tire dozaḳh meñ kyā hogā
sukūn-e-mustaqil dil be-tamannā shaiḳh kī sohbat
ye jannat hai to is jannat se dozaḳh kyā burā hogā
mire ash.ār par ḳhāmosh hai jiz-biz nahīñ hotā
ye vā'iz vā’izoñ meñ kuchh haqīqat-āshnā hogā
bharosa kis qadar hai tujh ko 'aḳhtar' us kī rahmat par
agar vo shaiḳh-sāhib kā ḳhudā niklā to kyā hogā
