MORE BYSheikh Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri

The Helpless One asked: If somebody has a dream in which a man's head is severed from his body, what would the interpretation be for the person dreaming? He replied: Which group did the man who had the dream belong to? He answered: He was a solitary. He replied: The interpretation of this dream does not apply to solitaries, for they have no connection with it. The normal interpretation is that whoever has such a dream is slaying his own carnal soul and is escaping from its clutches. This interpretation is inappropriate for a solitary. For such a person the meaning is that the patronage and assistance he receives from somebody is about to be cut off from him because he depends upon him, just as the body depends on the head. It is in this sense that the interpretation applies to the severance of patronage and assistance.

Qazi Khan asked: What would it mean if a wild animal attacks somebody in a dream? He replied: He would notice whether the wild animal overcomes him or not. If it does over- come him, he should realize that the quality associated with that animal has entered him and gained the ascendancy. This is because the qualities of all animals have been said to be found in man. For example, if someone dreams that a lion is attacking him and overcomes him, this is interpreted to mean that he has been overcome by anger, for anger and rage are associated with lions and dogs. In a similar way, those who dream about foxes interpret it as flattery and fawning, for these qualities are associated with foxes. Interpretation of a dream about leopards is that pride has overcome the dreamer, for pride and rebellion pertain to leopards. A person who dreams about pigs is said to be ensnared by lust and to be a thoroughly base follow. After- wards he added: Ain-ul-Qazaat has written that a traveler encounters a hundred thousand different qualities on his Path.

At each encounter he thinks: 'This is the real me. I have attained my true reality. That, however, is not him, but is from him. 4

Sheikh Muizzuddin put this question: What interpretation is given for dreams about oxen and similar beasts? He replied: Oxen and similar beasts indicate eating, sleeping and taking life easy. The interpretation is that such qualities have overcome him, namely food, sleep and an easy life.
