Second Assembly (Khwan-Pur-Nemat)

Sheikh Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri

MORE BYSheikh Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri

He (i.e. Zain) was privileged to kiss the ground. One of those present in the honorable assembly-may he be eternally honored-sneezed. The Helpless One said on this occasion: What sense can there be in a person's saying, 'Praise be to God' when he sneezes?¹

The Venerable Master replied: Sneezing is a sign of good health, and good health is a blessing. People express their gratitude for blessings received. They do so on this occasion also.

The Helpless One asked: Is it necessary to reply to the sneezer in such a way that he can hear it?

He replied: It is exactly analogous to the reply to a person's greeting. It should be such that he can hear it, but I have not seen any tradition concerning it.

The Helpless One enquired further: If someone sneezes during the Friday prayer and says, 'Praise be to God!' should those who hear him reply in a loud voice or quietly?

He replied: Neither loudly nor quietly.

    NOTE AND REFERENCE

1.It is interesting to note that the person who sneezes says, Praise be to God, in contrast to the common God bless you familiar to English-speaking people.
