e'tirāz-e-nakHchīrāñ bar suḳhan-e-ḳhargosh
How the beasts objected to the proposal of the hare.
qaum guftandash ki ai ḳhar gosh daar
ḳhvesh rā andāza-e-kHargosh daar
The company (of beasts) said to him: O donkey,
listen (to us)! Keep thyself within the measure of a hare!
hiiñ chah lā-fast iiñ ki az tū behtar aañ
dar ne-āurdand andar ḳhātir aañ
Eh, what brag is this—(an idea) which thy betters never brought into their minds?
mo'jabī yā ḳhud qazā maañ dar pai ast
varna iiñ dam lā.eq-e-chūñ tū ke ast
Thou art self-conceited, or Destiny is pursuing us; else,
how is this speech suitable to one like thee?

Thou art self-conceited, or Destiny is pursuing us; else,
how is this speech suitable to one like thee?
