    guftam ki raushan chuuñ qamar guftā ki ruḳhsār-e-manast

    guftam ki shīrīñ az shakar guftā ki guftār-e-manast

    I asked:” Is there anything brighter than the moon?” The reply was given: ”My cheek is brighter.”

    I questioned: ”Is there anything sweeter than the sugar?” The answer was uttered: ”Sweeter is my speech.”

    guftam tarīq-e-āshiqāñ guftā vafādārī buvad

    guftam makun jaur-o-jafā guftā ki iiñ kār-e-manast

    I asked: ”What is the etiquette of lovers?” The reply was given: ”Devotion and loyalty (towards beloved).”

    I said: “Be not brutal or unkind.” The answer came:” This is my way and custom.”

    guftam ki marg-e-āshiqāñ guftā ki dard-e-hijr-e-man

    guftam ilāj-e-zindagī guftā ki dīdār-e-manast

    I questioned: ”What is the death of lovers?” The answer was uttered: ”The sorrow of my separation.”

    I asked: “What is the remedy of life?” The reply was given: “My sight, my presence.”

    guftam bahārī ḳhizāñ guftā ki rashk-e-husn-e-man

    guftam ḳhajālat kabk guftā ki raftār-e-manast

    I asked: ”Is it the season of spring or the autumn?” The answer came:” It is envy of my beauty.”

    I questioned: ”What makes the woodland bird ashamed? ”The reply was given: ”It is my pace and swiftness.”

    guftam ki huurī parī guftā manam shāh-e-butāñ

    guftam ki 'ḳhusrau'-e-nā-tavāñ guftā parastār-e-manast

    I questioned: ”Are you a beautiful nymph or ethereal fairy?” The reply was uttered: ”I am the lord of all beauty.”

    I said: ”Khusrau had become too weak, frail and unable.” The answer came:” He is my devoted admirer, he alone worships me.”
