aawurd ba-iztirabam awwal ba-wujud
āvurd ba-iztirābam avval ba-vujūd
juz hairatam az hayāt chīze na furūd
raftem ba-ikrāh-o-na-dānem che buud
ziiñ āmdan-o-būdan-o-raftan maqsūd
Into this Universe, and why not knowing,
Nor whence, like water willy-nilly flowing!
And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,
And, without asking, whither hurried hence.
