gar gul na-buwad nasib ma Khaar inak
gar gul na-buvad nasīb mā ḳhaar iinak
var nuur namī rasad ba-mā naar iinak
var kHirqa-o-kHānqāh-o-shaikHe na-buvad
nāqūs-e-kalīsa-o-zunnār iinak
If flowers are not our lot, we shall content ourselves with the thorns thereof, if light is not to be ours let fire come to us! and if we do not get the patched garments of a religious mendicant, or the monastery, or the priest- hood of Islam, let the bell of the Christian Church or the sacred thread (of the fire-worshippers) be ours.
