Hal-o-Maqam (Temporary and established positions)
When God directs a state of spiritual contraction and expansion (qabz or bast), grief or happiness (buzn-o-tarah), awe and love (baibat-o-uns) intoxication and unconsciousness (masti-o-bekhudi) or other states to overwhelm the seekers temporarily, this is known as hal. It dissipates due to the lack of knowledge or concentration of the salik. When the same states gains permanency, it is called maqam.
Hal comes and goes but maqam is of a permanent nature. Those who are in a deep state of hal, are known as ‘asbab-e-talveen’, while those who are in the state of maqam are known as ‘ashab-e-tamkeem.’ This places maqam higher than hal.
