Majnun was the son of a chieftain of an Arab tribe, originally named Qais. Falling dēply in love with a girl named Layla, he became Majnun, meaning the mad one. In Persian Sufi poetry, Majnun and Layla are often used symbolically, representing the devoted sēker and the divine, respectively.
