Tansen's father Makrand Pandey lived under the patronage of the King of Gwalior. He was given the title of Tansen from the King of Gwalior. Bibhi Pandit had predicted the death of Tansen's father, so according to the custom of that time, he entrusted Tansen to a Sufi saint Hazrat Mahmous Gaus Gwaliori, who raised and fostered him. Tansen learned singing from Swami Haridas Ji. Tansen lived under the auspices of the king of Riwa for a long time. On the insistence of Emperor Akbar, the King of Rewa sent Tansen to Delhi in the year 1619. Tansen was a great musician as well as a great poet. His major works include- Sangeet Saar, (2) Ragamala and (3) Ganesh Stotra. He has composed much of his poetry in Braj, but in some verses Persian words are also found.
