The story of the king falling in love with a handmaiden and the king buying the handmaiden
buud shāhe dar zamāne pesh az iiñ
mulk-e-duniyā būdash-o-ham-mulk-e-dīñ
In olden time there was a king to whom belonged
the power temporal and also the power spiritual.
ittifāqan shaah roze shud savār
bā-ḳhavās-e-kHesh az bahr-e-shikār
It chanced that one day he rode with
his courtiers to the chase.
yak kanīzak diid shah bar shāh-rāh
shud ġhulām-e-āñ kanīzak jān-e-shāh
On the king's highway the king espied a
handmaiden: the king was enthralled by her.
murġh-e-jānash dar qafas chuuñ mī-tapīd
daad māl-o-āñ kanīzak rā ḳharīd
Forasmuch as the bird, his soul, was fluttering in
its cage, he gave money and bought the handmaiden.
chuuñ ḳharīd ū-rā-o-barkHurdār shud
aañ kanīzak az qazā bīmār shud
After he had bought her and won to his desire,
by Divine destiny she sickened.
aañ yake ḳhar dāsht pālānash na-būd
yaaft pālāñ gurg-e-ḳhar rā dar rabūd
A certain man had an ass but no pack-saddle: (as soon as)
he got a saddle, the wolf carried away his ass.
kūzah būdash aab mī nāmad ba-dast
aab rā chuuñ yaaft ḳhud kuuze shikast
He had a pitcher, but no water could be obtained:
when he found water, the pitcher broke.
shah tabībāñ jam.a kard az chap-o-rāst
guft jān-e-har do dar dast-e-shumāst
The king gathered the physicians together from left and
right and said to them, The life of us both is in your hands.
jān-e-man sahal-ast jān-e-jānam uust
dard-mand-o-kHasta-am darmānam uust
My life is of no account, (but) she is the life of my life.
I am in pain and wounded: she is my remedy.
har ki darmāñ kard marjān-e-marā
burd ganj-o-durr-o-marjān-e-marā
Whoever heals her that is my life will bear away
with him my treasure and pearls, large and small.
jumla guftandash ki jāñ-bāzī kunem
fahm gard ārem-o-ambāzī kunem
They all answered him, saying, We will hazard our lives and summon
all our intelligence and put it into the common stock.
har yake az mā masīh-e-'ālamest
har alam rā dar kaf-e-mā marhamest
Each of us is a Messiah of a world (of people):
in our hands is a medicine for every pain.
gar ḳhudā ḳhvāhad na-guftand az batar
pas ḳhudā ba-numūd-e-shāñ 'ijz-e-bashar
In their arrogance they did not say, If God will; therefore
God showed unto them the weakness of Man.
tark-e-istisnā murādam qasvatest
ne hamīñ guftan ki 'āriz hālatest
I mean (a case in which) omission of the saving clause is (due to) a hardness of heart;
not the mere saying of these words, for that is a superficial circumstance.
ai base nā-varda istisnā ba-guft
jān-e-ū bā-jān-e-istisnāst juft
How many a one has not pronounced the saving clause,
and yet his soul is in harmony with the soul of it!
har che kardand az 'ilāj-o-az davā
gasht rañj afzūn-o-hājat nā-ravā
The more cures and remedies they applied,
the more did the illness increase, and the need was not fulfilled.
aañ kanīzak az maraz chuuñ mū-e-shud
chashm-e-shah az ashk-e-ḳhūñ chuuñ jū-e-shud
The sick girl became (thin) as a hair, (while) the eyes of
the king flowed with tears of blood, like a river.
az qazā sar kañgbīñ safarā namūd
roġhan-e-bādām ḳhushkī mī fazūd
By Divine destiny, oxymel increased the bile,
and oil of almonds was producing dryness.
az halaila qabz shud itlāq raft
aab ātish rā madad shud ham-chu naft
From (giving) myrobalan constipation resulted,
relaxation ceased; and water fed the flames, like naphtha.
