muqarrar shudan-e-tarjīh-e-jahd bar tavakkul
How the superiority of exertion to trust in God was established.
ziiñ namat bisyār barhāñ guft sher
kaz javāb aañ jabr yaañ gashtand ser
The lion gave many proofs in this style,
so that those necessitarians became tired of answering (him).
rūba-o-āhū-o-kHargosh-o-shiġhāl
jabr rā ba-guzāshtand-o-qīl-o-qāl
Fox and deer and hare and jackal abandoned
(the doctrine of) necessity and (ceased from) disputation.
'ahd-hā kardand bā sher-e-zhiyāñ
kaañ darīñ bai'at na-yuftad dar ziyāñ
They made covenants with the furious lion,
(ensuring) that he should incur no loss in this bargain,
qism-e-har rozash ba-yāyad be-jigar
hājatash na-buvad taqāzā-e-digar
(That) the daily ration should come to him without trouble,
and that he should not need to make a further demand.
qur'a-e-bar hark ūftāde roz-roz
sū-e-āñ sher uu davīde ham-chu uuz
Day by day the one on whom the lot fell
would run to the lion as (swiftly as) a cheetah.
chuuñ ba-kHargosh aamad iiñ sāġhar ba-daur
baañg zad ḳhargosh kāḳhir chand jaur
When this cup (of death) came round to the hare,
the hare cried out, Why, how long (are we to endure this) injustice?
