    Interesting Fact

    English Translation: Reynold. A. Nicholson

    tā'na-e-zāġh dar dā'vā-e-hudhud

How the crow impugned the claim of the hoopoe.

zaaġh chuuñ ba-shunvūd aamad az hasad

    bā-sulaimāñ guft kazh guft-o-bad

When the crow heard (this), from envy he came

and said to Solomon, He has spoken false and ill.

    az adab na-buvad ba-pesh-e-shah maqāl

    ḳhāsa ḳhud lāf-e-daroġhīn-o-muhāl

It is not respectful to speak in the king's presence,

in particular (to utter) lying and absurd self-praise.

gar mar uu iiñ nazar buude mudām

    chuuñ na-dīde zer-e-mushte ḳhaak daam

If he had always had this (keen) sight, how would not

he have seen the snare beneath a handful of earth?

chuuñ giraftār aamde dar daam uu

chuuñ qafas andar shude nākām uu

How would he have been caught in the snare?

How would he have gone into the cage willy-nilly?

pas sulaimāñ guft ai hudhud ravāst

kaz tu dar avval qadah iiñ durd ḳhāst

Then Solomon said: O hoopoe, is it right that

these dregs have risen from thee at the first cup?

chuuñ numā.ī mastī ai ḳhurda tu doġh

    pesh-e-man laafe zanī āñgah daroġh

O thou who hast drunk buttermilk, how dost thou pretend intoxication and brag in my presence and tell lies besides?
