    zikr-e-dānish-e-kHargosh-o-bayān-e-fazīlat-o-munāfa'-e-dānish

    An account of the knowledge of the hare and an explanation

    of the excellence and advantages of knowledge.

    iiñ suḳhan pāyāñ na-dārad hosh daar

    gosh sū-e-qissa-e-kHargosh daar

    This topic hath no end.

    Give heed! Attend to the story of the hare.

    gosh-e-kHar ba-farosh-o-dīgar gosh ḳhar

    kiiñ suḳhan dar na-yābad gosh-e-ḳhar

    Sell your asinine (corporeal) ear and buy another ear,

    for the asinine ear will not apprehend this discourse.

    rau tu ruuba bāzī-e-ḳhargosh biiñ

    sher-gīrī sāzī-e-kHargosh biiñ

    Go, behold the foxy tricks played by the hare;

    behold the cunning of the hare and how he overthrew the lion.

    kHātim-e-mulk-e-sulaimānast 'ilm

    jumla 'ālam sūrat-o-jānast 'ilm

    Knowledge is the seal of the kingdom of Solomon:

    the whole world is form, and knowledge is the spirit.

    aadmī ziiñ hunar be-chāra gasht

    kHalq-e-dariyā-hā-o-kHalq-e-koh-o-dasht

    Because of this virtue, the creatures of the seas and

    those of mountain and plain are helpless before man.

    palañg-o-sher tarsāñ ham-chū muush

    nagañg-o-bahr dar safrā-o-josh

    Of him the pard and lion are afraid, like the mouse;

    from him the leviathan and the sea are in pallor and agitation.

    parī-o-dev sāhil-hā giraft

    har yake dar jā-e-pinhāñ giraft

    From him peri and demon took to the shores

    (sought refuge): each took abode in some hiding-place.

    aadmī dushman-e-pinhāñ basīst

    ādmī-e-bā-hazar 'āqil kasīst

    Man hath many a secret enemy:

    the cautious man is a wise one.

    kHalq-e-pinhāñ zisht-shāñ-o-kHūb-shāñ

    zanad dar dil ba-har-dam kūb-e-shāñ

    (There are) hidden creatures, evil and good:

    at every instant their blows are striking on the heart.

    bahr-e-ġhusl ar dar ravī dar jū-e-bār

    bar tu āsebe zanad dar aab ḳhaar

    If you go into the river to wash yourself,

    a thorn in the water inflicts a hurt upon you.

    garche pinhāñ kHaar dar ābast past

    chūñki dar tu mī-kHalad daanī ki hast

    Although the thorn is hidden low in the water,

    you it is there since it is pricking you.

    ḳhaar kHār-e-vahy-hā-o-vasvasa

    az hazārāñ kas buvad ne yak kaseh

    The pricks of (angelic) inspirations and (satanic)

    temptations are from thousands of beings, not (only) from one.

    baash tā-hissa-hā-e-tū mubdal shavad

    ba-bīnī shān-o-mushkil hal shavad

    Wait (patiently) for your (bodily) senses to be transmuted,

    so that you may see them (the hidden beings), and the

    difficulty may be solved,

    sukhan-hā-e-kiyāñ rad karda-i

    kiyāñ sarvar-e-ḳhud karda-i

    So that (you may see) whose words you have

    rejected and whom you have made your captain.
