gahe majnūñ gahe lailā gahe dīvāna farzānam
gahe shore ba-ḳhud dāram gahe ḳhud rā namī-dānam
I sometimes become Majnu, sometimes Laila, and sometimes a clever madman.
Sometimes a tumult arises within me, sometimes I remain unfamiliar even to myself.
jamāl-e-yār mī-bīnam na man tanhā darīñ hastī
tamāsha-gāh-e-yak-a.alam shuda tasvīr-e-jānānam
I do not behold the solitary beauty of the beloved in this world.
The image of my beloved is a spectacle for the whole world.
ze-bahr-e-faiz-e-fayyāzī huzūr-e-ḳhvesh hāsil shud
ki aamad az hamūñ dariyā dur-e-maknūñ ba-dāmānam
Through the grace of a faqir, I have attained proximity,
From this unseen realm, it is flowing into my hem.
na hindū ne musalmānam na gabram ham na tarsāyam
chunāñ mahv-e-ḳhayāl-e-ḳhud ki man kas rā namī-dānam
I am neither Hindu, nor Muslim, nor Zoroastrian, nor Christian.
In my imagination, I am so absorbed that I have no knowledge of anyone else.
kase maarā 'alī' goyad kase goyad marā baaqī
ajāyab shaan mī-dāram ba-shān-e-ḳhvesh hairānam
Some call me Ali, some call me the existing one.
I am in a strange state, I am troubled by my own condition.
