har ki az jām-e-lab-e-mai-gūna-e-ū mai-ḳhvār shud
be-ḳhabar az do-jahāñ shud fāriġh az aġhyār shud
Whoever drank from the wine-like lips of the beloved became indifferent to both worlds and detached from all others.
nargis-e-maḳhmūr-e-ū dar majlis-e-mai-ḳhvārgāñ
baada shud ham jaam shud ham sāqī-o-ḳhammār shud
In the company of wine-lovers, those narcissus-like eyes became wine, goblet, cupbearer, and intoxication alike.
az pai-e-āzār-e-jān-e-mardumāñ mizgān-e-ū
niish shud paikān shud nok-e-sināñ shud ḳhaar shud
To torment humankind, those eyelashes turned into thorns, spear-points, and arrowheads.
tā kunad nazzāra husn-e-ḳhvesh rā aañ dil-baram
dil-rubā shud chāra-gar shud tālib-e-dīdār shud
That the beloved might behold the splendour of beauty, they became both the captor and the cure, the beholder and the beheld.
vasf-e-zulf-e-āñ-nigār az 'auhadī' ba-shino ki guft
maar shud ham daam shud zanjīr shud zunnār shud
As Auhadi remarked of those tresses, they turned into serpents, into fetters, into snares, and into sacred cords.
