shor afgandan ba-a.alam chuuñ ki ḳhud manzūr buud
jalva kard aañ husn rā kaz chashmhā mastūr buud
To stir tumult and clamour in the world was his desire,
And so he unveiled his hidden beauty.
aañ parī az dīda-e-ḳhud ḳhveshtan mastūr buud
lek mail-e-dīdan-e-husn-e-ḳhudash manzūr buud
That fairy-faced beloved was veiled even from himself,
Yet he longed to behold his own splendour.
az nigāh-e-mast-e-sāqī-o-surūd-e-mutribāñ
har yake dar bazm-e-jānāñ be-ḳhud-o-maḳhmūr buud
With the cupbearer’s enraptured glances and the minstrels’ melodies,
Every soul in the beloved’s gathering is blissful and intoxicated.
be-dil-o-nanag-o-rusvā.ī-o-bad-nāmī tamām
āshiqāñ rā az qazā-o-az qadar manshūr buud
Listlessness, shame and flaw, disgrace and dishonour—
These have, since eternity, been the fate of lovers.
'ahmadā' gar āshiqī az teġh-e-jānāñ sar ma-tāb
kushtan-e-ushshāq andar kū-e-ū dastūr buud
Ahmad, if you are a true lover, do not retreat before the beloved’s sword;
For in this lane, the slaying of lovers is but the custom.
