shudam ba-su-e-chaman barha ba-bu-e-kase
shudam ba-sū-e-chaman bārhā ba-bū-e-kase
gahe shagufta na-dīdam gule za-rū-e-kase
I searched for a fragrance in the garden, over and over,
But never saw the flower of a face open before me.
kujā ravam za ki pursam che-gūna sabr kunam
ki gum shuda ast dil-e-zār-e-man ba-kū-e-kase
Where shall I go, whom can I ask, how can I be patient?
My broken heart has been lost in another’s lane.
hazār haif na-yāmad gahe ba-bālīnam
guzasht 'umr-e-'azīzam ba-ārzū-e-kase
Alas, not a soul came to my bedside,
And my life was spent in longing for someone.
ḳhushā nasīb zahe qismatam ki bā'd-e-fanā
kunand dafn marā dostā ba-kū-e-kase
My fate would have been blessed indeed
If, when I was gone, I had been buried in the Beloved’s street.
chunīñ shakar ba-kalām-e-tū 'ashraf' az che shuda ast
magar shuda ast za-tāsīr-e-guftugū-e-kase
Why is there such sweetness in your verse, Ashraf?
Perhaps because it carries the echo of a beloved voice.
