The father of Qazi Mahmud 'Dariyya' was Qazi Mohammed Hameed, and among his three sons, Dariyai had a bent towards Sufism since his childhood. He was always engrossed in God’s remembrance. Soon his fame spread far and wide. The ‘Meel’ caste of Gujarat revered him very greatly and called him Khwajah Khizr. Dariya has two famous compositions - (1) Miftahul Kulub (2) Tohfa-e-Tulkari. Apart from this, he has composed soulful lyrical verses in raga-raganis such as Malhar, Ramkali, Purbi, Todi, Ghanasari etc. In his compositions there is intense passion and expression of suffering of love. His poetry is popular among all. Even after centuries have passed, his compositions are sung by music lovers far and wide in the states of Gujarat, Saurashtra, Malwa, Rajasthan etc.
