Waris Shah was born in the town of Jandiala Sher Khan in Punjab in 1718. His father's name was Syed Gul Sher Shah. He was just a few years old when he left for Kasur to acquire knowledge and Maulana Ghulam Murtaza, who was visiting Kasur at that time, came to his service. He studied with them along with Bulleh Shah. After acquiring worldly knowledge, Maulvi Sahib gave permission to go and acquire esoteric knowledge and swear allegiance wherever you want. Bulleh Shah swore allegiance to Shah Inayat Qadri while Waris Shah swore allegiance to the family of Khwaja Fariduddin Masood Ganj-e-Shakar. Even today, Waris Shah's words and his phrases are often liked by young and old alike and are oft-quoted. Waris Shah was in fact a Dervish Sufi poet. His period is from Muhammad Shah Rangeela to Ahmad Shah Abdali. Waris Shah is also called the Shakespeare of the Punjabi language. Waris Shah's speech is very popular in India and Pakistan especially among Sikhs. Waris Shah died on 10 Muharram 1220 AH.
