afsos ki kunhash ba-kHayalam na rasid
afsos ki kunhash ba-kHayālam na rasīd
andesha dar iiñ bādiya bisyār davīd
bar rū-e-kHayāl-e-kHām hairāñ shuda-am
bar parda-e-’ankabūt sūrat kai kashīd
Alas ! my imagination failed to grasp Him,
Though it flew hard in this wilderness.
I’m vexed at this imperfect imagination which knows not,
Who gives shape to the spider’s web
