az shāḳh-e-barahna sāya-dārī matlab
'izzat za qanā'at ast-o-ḳhvārī za tama'
bā-'izzat-e-kHvesh baash ḳhvārī matlab
O Sarmad, expect not love from the men of the world !
A tree without foliage is no shelter against the sun.
Honour lies with contentment and disgrace with greed ;
Live with honour and seek not to live in disgrace !
