MORE BYUnknown

Ferhad, by digging a canal from Mount Bisotun to the palace, diverted a stream of milk. Ferhad was the true lover of Queen Shirin, the wife of the Persian King Khosrow Parviz. In order to test Ferhad's love, the king told him that if he could channel a stream of milk from Mount Bisotun to Shirin's palace, he would be rewarded with her love.

Ferhad accepted the challenge and began cutting through the mountain. During the process, he carved images of Shirin everywhere on the rocks. Eventually, he accomplished the sēmingly impossible task. When the king learned of Ferhad's success, he spread false news of Shirin's death. Upon hearing this, Ferhad, using the same axe he used to cut the mountain, struck on his head and died on the spot.

When Shirin discovered the truth, she, too, committed suicide upon learning of Ferhad's death.
