He was born of 18th August 1878, in Khanqah Mu'azzam, Mohallah Khanqah, Bihar Sharif. Initially, he memorized the Qur'an under the tutelage of Hafiz Abdullah, and learnt Arabic and Persian from Maulana Syed Amiruddin Syedi. Shafi had an innate bent towards poetry, and initially took corrections from his father, and later, Ahqar Bihari. Shafi was very fond of Shah Akbar Danapuri’s poetry. Shafi's family were the beacons of Sufism in Bihar, so it was natural for mystical ideas to enter his poetry. Shafi Bihari knew Persian well. He also translated some books from Persian to Urdu. He also used to write articles which were published in Al-Ameen. Shafi Bihari's followers are found in good numbers in Dhaka.
