The Parrot and the Bald Dervish - Daftar-e-Awwal
Once upon a time, there was a grocer who possessed a lovely green parrot who sang beautifully and spoke eloquently. Not only was the parrot an excellent companion, but he was also an excellent guard for the grocer's business. He kept watch at all hours of the day and interacted with clients in a friendly manner, entertaining them and improving the grocer's sales.
When the grocer went home for lunch and left the business in the care of the parrot, a cat raced into the shop pursuing a mouse, frightening the bird. In his desperate attempt to defend himself, the parrot knocked a couple bottles of almond oil off the shelves, breaking them and splattering oil all over himself and the shop floor.
The grocer arrived not long after, finding the place in disorder, the floor slick with oil, and the parrot perched guiltily in a corner. The grocer lost his cool in the blink of an eye and smacked the bird in the head with all his strength. The poor bird, who was already feeling terrible and despondent about his carelessness, couldn't take the humiliation, let alone the pain from the strike, and he immediately shed all of his feathers.
The parrot ceased speaking and singing soon after the almond oil accident. The grocer understood how serious his blunder in striking the bird had been; not only had he lost his joyful buddy, but his successful business had also been harmed. With no one else to blame but himself, he was astounded that he had single-handedly jeopardized his livelihood.
He cried, I wish I'd broken my hand! How could I have done such a thing to my sweet-voiced bird? How could I have acted in such a horrible manner?
The shopkeeper began giving alms to every needy dervish that walked by his shop, hoping that by performing good deeds, he would be forgiven, and his bird would resume his seductive voice. The grocer struck his luck after three days and nights of remorse and suffering the parrot's silence.
When a bald dervish entered the shop, the parrot immediately began to speak: Did you also spill bottles of almond oil?
The shop's few customers laughed and grinned at the parrot, who had mistakenly assumed that the bald man had met the same fate as himself!
Never relate one deed with another, darling little parrot, one of the customers stated tenderly. Even if they appear to be the same on the surface, one should never compare oneself to others; nothing is as it seems!
