jam' shudan-e-nakHchīrāñ gird-e-kHargosh-o-sanā guftan uu rā
How the beasts gathered round the hare and spoke in praise of him.
jam' gashtand aañ zamāñ jumla vuhūsh
shād-o-ḳhandāñ az tarab dar zauq-o-josh
Then all the wild beasts assembled, joyous
and laughing gleefully in rapture and excitement.
halqa kardand uu chū sham'-e-darmiyāñ
sajda kardandash hama sahrā-e-yāñ
They formed a ring, he (the hare) in the midst like a candle:
they bowed (in homage) and said to him, Hark!
tū farishta-e-āsmānī yā parī
ne tu 'izrā.īl sherān-e-narī
Art thou a heavenly angel or a peri?
No, thou art the Azrael of fierce lions.
har che hastī jān-e-mā qurbān-e-tust
dast-burdī dast-o-bāzūyat durust
Whatever thou art, our souls are offered in sacrifice to thee.
Thou hast prevailed. Health to thy hand and arm!
raañd haq iiñ aab rā dar jū-e-tū
āfrīñ bar dast-o-bar bāzū-e-tū
God turned this water into thy stream.
Blessing on thy hand and arm!
baaz go tā chuuñ sagālīdī ba-makr
aañ 'avāñ rā chuuñ ba-mālīdī ba-makr
Explain how thou didst meditate with guile,
and how thou didst guilefully wipe out that ruffian.
baaz go tā qissa-e-darmān-hā shavad
baaz go tā marham-e-jān-hā shavad
Explain, in order that the tale may be the means of curing
(our malady); explain, that it may be a salve for our souls.
baaz go kaz zulm-e-āñ istam numā
sad hazārāñ zaḳhm dārad jān-e-mā
Explain! for in consequence of the iniquity of that
tyrant our souls have myriads of wounds.
guft tā.īd-e-ḳhudā buud ai mahān
varna ḳhargoshe ki bāshad dar jahān
“O Sirs,” said he, “it was (by) God's aid; else,
who in the world is a hare (who am I, that I should have been able to do this)?
quvvatam bakHshīd-o-dil rā nuur daad
nūr-e-dil mar dast-o-pā rā zor daad
He (God) bestowed power on me and gave light to my heart:
the light in my heart gave strength to hand and foot.
az bar-e-haq mī rasad tafzīl-hā
baaz ham az haq rasad tabdīl-hā
From God come preferments (to high position), from God
also come changes (which bring one to low estate).
haq ba-daur-o-naubat iiñ tā.īd rā
mī numāyad ahl-e-zan-o-dīd rā
God in (due) course and turn is ever displaying
this (Divine) aid to doubters and seers (alike).
hiiñ ba-mulk-e-naubatī shādī ma-kun
ai tu basta-e-naubat āzādī ma-kun
Take heed! Do not exult in a kingdom bestowed in turns (passing from one to another),
O thou who art the bondsman of Vicissitude, do not act as though thou wert free!
āñ-ki mulkash bartar az naubat tanand
bartar az haft anjumash naubat zanand
(But) those for whom is prepared a kingdom beyond Vicissitude,
for them the drums (of sovereignty) are beaten beyond the Seven Planets.
bartar az naubat mulūk-e-bāqī and
dūr-e-dā.im rūh-hā bā-sāqī and
Beyond Vicissitude are the kings everlasting:
their spirits are circling with the Cupbearer perpetually.
tark-e-īñ shurb ar ba-goī yak do roz
dar kashī andar sharāb-e-ḳhuld poz
If thou wilt renounce this drinking (of worldly pleasures) for a day or two (for thy brief lifetime),
thou wilt dip thy mouth in the drink of Paradise.
