    āstīñ bar ruḳh kashīdī ham-chu makkār aamdī

    bā-ḳhudī ḳhud dar tamāshā sū-e-bāzār aamdī

    (O Eternal Beloved) You covered Your face with the sleeve of concealment, and appeared as though in disguise.

    With Your own essence and authority, You came to the marketplace to reveal Yourself.

    ḳhveshtan jalva kardī andarīñ ā.īna-hā

    ā.īna ism-e-nihādī ḳhud ba-izhār aamdī

    Within the mirrors of creation, You Yourself shone forth You placed the mirror, and yet You Yourself appeared within it. (That is, the universe became the medium of Your manifestations; You called it a mirror for the reflection of beauty, and through it You revealed Your splendour and majesty.)

    dar bahārāñ gul shudī dar sahn-e-gulzār aamdī

    baa'd azaañ bulbul shudī bā-nāla-e-zār aamdī

    In springtime, You took on the form of flowers and became the adornment of the garden. Then You became the nightingale, falling in love with Your own beauty, and raised the cry of longing.

    shor-e-mansūr az kujā-o-dār-e-mansūr az kujā

    ḳhud zadī bāñg-e-anal-haq ḳhud sar-e-dār aamdī

    How lofty Mansur’s claim, how lowly the gallows’ frame.

    It was He Himself who raised the cry of Ana al-Haqq,

    and He Himself who became the adornment of the scaffold.

    guft ‘quddūs’-e-faqīre dar fanā-o-dar baqā

    ḳhud-ba-ḳhud āzād buudī ḳhud giraftār aamdī

    At the stage of annihilation and subsistence, a dervish named Quddus said: “O Beloved without beginning, You were free in Yourself, and yet You bound Yourself within Yourself.”

    ba-KHudi KHud dar tamasha su-e-bazar aamdi
