MORE BYArif

    ze-har sūrat ruḳh-e-be-chūñ barāmad

    ba-har rañge ruḳh-e-gulgūñ barāmad

From every form a peerless face arose,

In every shade the crimson visage shone.

    agar bar sūrat-e-dil-hā na-būde

    ba-shakl-e-dilbar-o-dil chuuñ aamad

Had no image dwelt within the hearts,

How could it have gleamed as Beloved and as heart?

    chū andar josh aamad bahr-e-vahdat

    ze-kasrat-e-mauj-hā bairūñ barāmad

When the sea of Oneness swelled in tempest,

Its waves broke forth as forms of many.

    ba-bīñ bar sūrat-e-mahbūb-o-dilkash

    jamālash az qad-e-mauzūñ barāmad

Look upon that lovely and adored face,

Whose splendour arose from a stature of harmony.

    chū ḳhurda bāda-e-gul-rañg 'ārif'

    ba-shakl-e-sāqī-e-mauzūñ barāmad

When ʿĀrif tasted the wine of roses,

He became as the elegant bearer of the goblet.
