Real Name : Noorul Ain

Born :Lahore, Punjab

Born Noor-ul-Ain, father was Qazi Amanatullah and his grandfather was Qazi of Batala, Lahore. Numbered among the nobles of Punjab. he wrote under the pen name ‘Waqif’. In Tazkira Majma 'al-Nifais, Khan-e-Arzu writes, “Waqif had a great command over many arts and sciences”. One learns that Waqif much endeavored writing Ghazals on the patterns of earlier poets. Waqif had also written a letter to Khan Arzoo requesting him to correct his poems but Khan Arzoo had denied that he was not qualified to correct his poems. Despite this, Waqif had sent some of his poems in the service of Khan Arzoo for the purpose of correction. Khan Arzoo was very happy to see his poems and he guessed that if he continued to compose in this manner, one day he would attain a high rank. Waqif Lahori's poetry is the poetry of flowers and lamps. Love is a sweeping theme of his poetry. One of his great couplets read: Magar Gul Shab Tu-raa dar khwab diida Kih pesh-az-Sub’h pairaahan dariida (Perhaps the rose saw you in the dream at night; for its apparel is torn, before morning) Waqif Lahori died in 1195 AH.
