Profile of Narsing Mehta
Famous as the Adi-Kavi of Gujarati, "Vaishnav Jan to" is his famous composition which was sung by Mahatma Gandhi and even today it is a regular recitation in Gandhi ashrams. Born in village Talaja near Junagadh. The influence of Chaitanya is reflected in his devotion. Vishnudas (1624-1656), a poet of Khambhat, has composed Mameru. This proves that by 1600, a poet named Narsi was famous among people from Saurashtra to Khambhat. Narsi has its own special form of devotion which includes virtuous devotion and knowledge of Vedanta.
