Born Nawab Syed Muhammad Khan, Rind Lakhnavi was one of the prominent personalities of Lucknow. He was born on September 3, 1797 in Faizabad, and his family was quite close to the Nawabs. From childhood, his nature was inclined towards poetry. During his stay in Faizabad, he used to take corrections from Mir Mustahasan Khaliq who was the father of Mir Anees. Rind Lucknow moved to Lucknow after the death of Nawab Bahu Begum and became a disciple of Khwaja Atish Lakhnavi. It was at Atish’s insistence that he renounced his earlier pen-name ‘Vafaa’ and adopted the ‘Rind’ as his Nom de plume. Rind was a handsome, loving and wealthy nobleman who lived a life of riches and comforts, but at the end of his life he became a recluse. He even departed for the pilgrimage of Hajj, but passed away in Mumbai in 1857.
